A new park for Burwood based on blue green infrastructure

Wangal Park is a large new park in Burwood, a rapidly growing town centre in Sydney. The site has been transformed from a former landfill into a major new public and ecological asset for the local community.

Sustainable water management initiatives were a key part of the project, including four new wetlands, a recirculation system and cascades to reduce the risk of algal blooms during hot dry summers. Treated water is also stored and reused for irrigation of the park.

The stormwater treatment system is also designed as a new ecological feature within the park, and a number of new habitat initiatives were designed and built as part of the project, including a new mudflat area for waders, a range of large logs with hollows, rock piles and log pile habitat areas.

David Knights and Andrew McMillan also developed the designs for the new boardwalks and bridges, as well as the grading of the site including the capping of the landfill.
