A new focus on WSUD in a changing LGA

David Knights and Alexa McAuley undertook a WSUD policy and practice implementation review for the City of Parramatta. The City of Parramatta is the fastest growing LGA in Sydney and is undergoing major re-development and will continue to do so into the future. This development offers the potential to improve stormwater management by implementing stormwater management controls on new development.

The City of Parramatta also has a vision to bring back swimming to the Parramatta River and has identified that activating the CBD river foreshore and bringing back swimming to the Parramatta River is a priority. David and Alexa undertook a number of strategic tasks to better understand the strategic levers available to Council to assist in achieving this vision.

As part of this project we interviewed more than a dozen City of Parramatta staff from a wide range of operational and planning staff, and undertook a review of Council’s various water-related policies to assist in the harmonisation of development controls post-amalgamation. The outcomes of the project included development of a revised WSUD policy and procedure for Council, recommendations on new development controls and a prioritisation tool based on mapping of a range of priority elements.
