Bringing back swimming to the Parramatta River

David Knights developed a strategic framework to understand the potential for swimming at various sites along the Parramatta River. The Parramatta River Catchment Group through its Our Living River campaign aims to make the river swimmable by 2025. The Activation Framework was part of a coordinated masterplan process to achieve this vision.

The framework consisted of a three part tool including a traffic light assessment of the feasibility of swimming, the vulnerability of a particular site to various hazards and an assessment of the potential for a site for different scales of activation. The three components of the tool provide an evidence based approach to assessing any site’s potential to be activated as a swim site and includes technical, community and urban design criteria.

The second part of the project was to apply the framework to assess twelve identified swim sites along the river and to identify three sites for activation for swimming. The activation options for each space respond to the particular site characteristics, its physical location on the river and the opportunities at each site. Visualisations were developed to capture the imagination of the community and garner support for the project and the Masterplan as a whole.
