A new bridge for the Cooks River

Lang Road bridge crosses the Cooks River where the GreenWay will meet the Cooks River shared path. The old bridge, which was narrow and steep with tight switchbacks, was inadequate for current and future needs. Council sought a concept design for a new bridge that would meet both engineering and landscape design criteria, as well as the community’s expectations for this significant landmark.

Alexa McAuley, working with McGregor Coxall in 2018-19, led a team to develop a concept design for the new bridge. The team included McGregor Coxall (landscape design), Fleetwood (structural design) and MBM (quantity surveying). Alexa brought the active transport design perspective including knowledge of Austroads guidelines, as well as experience in flood impact assessment and river bank restoration.

To complete the package of works, Alexa also developed concept designs to tie the bridge into existing infrastructure and the surrounding landscape, as well as a new accessible kayak launch adjacent to the bridge.

A contractor has been appointed and construction is due to commence in 2020.
