A new separated cycleway for Sydney’s growing network

David Knights and Alexa McAuley developed route options and concept designs for approximately 2km of active transport network in St Peters, Erskineville and Newtown, to take advantage of the reduction in traffic volumes on a section of the Princes Highway and Sydney Park Rd due to Westconnex.

We worked closely with an integrated project team of two local councils and the RMS to facilitate the preferred route and to develop concept designs of the preferred route. Key challenges of the project were to facilitate movement through the entrance to a train station and busy retail street with high volumes of pedestrian movement, and to minimise conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists. The retail area had significant pedestrian movement at all times of day and a key challenge was to facilitate safe passage of cyclists through these zones.
